Dispelling Three Luxury Vinyl Flooring Myths

Cyndi's Carpet has been in the flooring business for over 18 years now and in that time, we have talked to a lot of customers about all sorts of flooring topics. If there is one thing we've noticed throughout these interactions, it's that there are a lot of misconceptions about flooring out there.

Today, we're going to clear up a few misconceptions about one of the most misunderstood flooring materials out there, luxury vinyl flooring. We had our team throw together this quick rundown of the three most common and persistent myths about this incredible, yet frequently maligned flooring material, and why they are false.

1. Myth: Luxury Vinyl Flooring and Laminate Are One and the Same

We're not totally sure why people think this is true, but it seems to pop up in conversations with customers time and time again. In any event, they are different in very important ways.

While on the surface they may appear to be the same, the key difference between these two flooring types is found in the core of the material itself. Laminate flooring's core is usually made from some sort of wood-derived material. This means that all of the problems that moisture can cause to a wood floor, can occur with laminate flooring.

Luxury vinyl flooring, on the other hand, is made from completely synthetic materials that will not succumb to warping, buckling, or problems with mold or mildew as readily.

2. Myth: Luxury Vinyl Flooring Has an Outdated Aesthetic

Whereas myth #1 is completely out of the blue from our perspective, this one is completely understandable. It wasn't too long ago when luxury vinyl flooring really did look awful. Most of us can think back to the horrible, speckled faux-stone flooring of our grandmother's kitchen, or the local greasy spoon diner, but those days are well past us.

Modern digital imaging techniques have resulted in a renaissance for vinyl flooring. Nowadays, vinyl flooring can convincingly recreate the look of just about any hard-surface flooring material out there, and do it so well that even a trained eye could be fooled.

3. Myth: The Image Layer Fades Quickly From Foot Traffic

Again, there was a time when this was absolutely true, but much like the problem of aesthetics addressed in myth #2, this problem has gone the way of the dinosaur. Much the way imaging technology has elevated the quality of vinyl flooring, so too have advances in materials technology.

Modern vinyl flooring is one of the sturdier options out there, thanks to the incredible new materials used to create the wear layer. "Walk-off" is a thing of the past!
